Ace Attorney localizer explains alternate-universe Los Angeles

T&T_cover_art

While the Ace Attorney games take place in an urban Japanese city, for the European and North American games, they take place in Los Angeles. Although the games have gotten their fair share of ribbing for this decision, game localizer Janet Hsu posted a blog entry about some of the decisions behind this change, as well as the alternate-universe version of Los Angeles that makes this possible.

When I took over the series’ localization direction starting with the second game, one of the first things I had to deal with was what to do with Maya’s hometown and all the mysticism surrounding the Fey clan. It was then that I created a little headcanon for myself (which I suppose is actually real canon now for the localized version): while “Gyakuten Saiban” takes place in Japan, the Los Angeles that “Ace Attorney” takes place in is an alternate universe where anti-Japanese sentiments and anti-immigrant laws were not enacted, and Japanese culture was allowed to flourish and blend into the local culture in the same manner as other immigrant cultures. Not counting budget and time restraints, this little headcanon has pretty much dictated what I would keep as Japanese and what to completely localize. For example, anything related to Maya’s clan and the Kurain Channeling Technique is pretty much guaranteed to stay Japanese because that’s her heritage while Japanese foods that are not commonly known in the West will probably be localized in the interest of keeping thegame from needing a 50-page explanatory booklet.

By the way, random facts: I adore the fandom name “Japanifornia”, and imagine my surprise when I first saw the “Big Hero 6” movie trailer! No matter what anyone says, Japanifornia will always be THE ORIGINAL San Fransokyo to me. *grin*

The blog post also talks about Jean Armstrong’s character, certain characters’ catchphrases, and more.

One Piece manga sends off Naruto with a classy secret message

$

This year’s 50th issue of Shueisha‘s Shonen Jump magazine is a legendary one with the final twochapters of its mega-hit series Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto. In this issue, the 766th chapter (“Smile”) of Eiichiro Oda‘s One Piece manga seems rather normal. However, fans have found a secret message embedded into the One Piece chapter’s title page.

As fans pointed out, the first characters on each of the menu signs in the background spell out the Japanese words, “Naruto otsukaresan deshita.” The signs read: “Nasu no itame” (eggplant stir-fry), “Rukkora no sarada” (arugula salad), “Tofu,” “Otsumami” (bar snacks) “Karee,” (Curry) “San,” (written as the character for ‘three’), “Den…,” “Shōyū no” (soy sauce, with the first character reading ‘shi‘), and “tamago” (egg).

The phrase “Naruto otsukaresan deshita” is an informal way to say something along the lines of, “Naruto, good job after working so long.”

That’s not all — the One Piece logo is drawn with a Konoha symbol, a shuriken weapon, and Naruto himself.

Also on the page, you can also see the Konoha emblem in Nami’s dress, Luffy eating a bowl of Ramen Ichiraku, and a ramen-eating fox wearing a shirt with a fish cake. (The word for fish cake in Japanese is “naruto.”) Even more hidden in the image, you can see someone eating with Luffy at the same table … someone with a jumpsuit very similar to an orange ninja we all know.

Finally, the very last page of the Naruto manga itself has a call-back to One Piece, in the form of a graffiti with Luffy’s symbol.

7ec93820

It didn’t take long for one Japanese fan to draw a touching comic strip:

Luffy: Are you going to quit being a ninja?
Naruto: Huh? No…
Naruto: It’s just that one person’s story has ended…
Naruto: But there’s still more ahead of that.
Luffy: I’m still going to adventure!
Naruto: Hahaha! I bet!
Naruto: You’re a straight-forward guy about your dreams…
Naruto: So make them come true, Luffy.
Luffy: Of course!
Luffy: I’m the man who’s going to become the king of pirates!
Naruto: …Yeah! OK, I’m going to go on ahead!
Luffy: Yeah! See you later, Menma- (bamboo shoots)
Naruto: I told you, it’s Naruto! Believe it!

Naruto is ending in Shonen Jump after 15 years of serialization, two main television anime series, a spin-off television series, and a multitude of movies. The film advertised as the final installment, The Last -Naruto the Movie-, will open in Japanese theaters on December 6.

Thanks to Nekorin for the comic strip tip!

Police stop Chibatman from taking part in marathon

$

It seems that regardless of the place, age, or circumstance, vigilantes will always be met with some sort of resistance from the officials. That was the case this week when the Chiba Prefectural Police Department announced that they would not be allowing the mysterious masked citizen, known as “Chibatman,” to participate in next year’s Chiba Kenmin Marathon.

81e9b1e8

Chibatman, who had originally been approved by the marathon’s event committee to be a pacer for one half of the race astride his custom-built Batpod, was notified that his participation as a local superhero might be too reckless. Representatives of the police force explained their reasoning by saying that while they do think that citizens and residents would be delighted to see Chibatman participate, there is the possibility that spectators might get too excited and move or jump out on to the road in response, causing an obstruction or accident to occur.

c66c1e4d8dcee84808a2e80378996c9d

Despite this, permission has been granted for the use of Chibatman’s 3-wheeled homemade Batpod, as there is already a precedent for similar vehicles in performanceand demonstrations such as parades where riders will wave to spectators in the audience. Hopefully this allowance will make the case for Chibatman’s previously planned appearance.

yahoo1_11

Chibatman, who can usually be seen riding around the streets of the Chiba Prefecture aboard his Batpod in full costume has been an active part of the community, and has been featured in news reports both locally and abroad. According to several interviews with him, his sole motivation is that he wants to make the people of his prefecture smile. Chibatman’s inspirational stride through Chiba has been going on for approximately three years now.

The Attack on Titan and Marvel crossover comic that Magazine House‘s Brutus magazine is publishing on Saturday features characters from Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers as they battle the Female Titan, Colossal Titan, Armored Titan, and others in New York City.

aot-marvel

The crossover features English dialogue, but includes a Japanese translation guide. Original manga creator Hajime Isayama himself created the plot for the comic.

The comic is titled Attack on Avengers, and the full staff lineup includes:

Scenario: Hajime Isayama
Breakdown: C.B. Cebulski
Line Artist: Gerardo Sandoval
Color Artist: Dono Sanchez Almara
Assistant Editor: Jake Thomas
Editor: Tom Brevoort
Editor in Chief: Axel Alonso
Chief Creative Officer: Joe Quesada
Publisher: Dan Buckley
Executive Producer: Alan Fine

The issue also includes a short discussion with Marvel Comics Senior Vice President of Creative & Creator Development C.B. Cebulski titled “The Boom Has Landed in America. The Reason Is Because Americans Are Becoming Prisoners” that discusses Attack on Titan‘s popularity in America. Cebulski introduces the English phrase “Nothing Sacred” when discussing how major characters in the series will suddenly die. He also talks about how today’s youth in America live in uneasy times, with metal detectors at the entrances to high schools and children being banned from playing outside. He said people can feel like they are living within walled confines, and so perhaps American youths can emotionally invest in Eren and his friends’ fight with the Titans beyond the walls.

The same issue of Brutus features a cover drawn by Isayama, as well as an interview with Isayama, and a preview of the upcoming Attack on Titan art exhibit.

Disney’s Big Hero 6 gets anime short by comedian Tekken in Japan

Disney is introducing its latest animated film, Big Hero 6, in Japan with a video animated by Tekken, a comedian famous for emotional flip-book-style anime shorts. The short features the song “Story” by popular singer AI.

The adventure story revolves around Hiro, a 14-year-old boy who lost his dear brother Tadashi in a mysterious accident, and Baymax, a personal healthcare companion robot developed by Tadashi. The story is set in San Fransokyo, a fictional city that combines the imagery of San Francisco and Tokyo.

Inspired by the film Tekken created this promotional video about the bond between the two brothers, and the literal and figurative healing Baymax gives Hiro.

The movie’s producer Roy Conli said that he loves Tekken’s flip-book animation. Conli discussed working with Tekken several times, and he lauded the final work as truly marvelous. Big Hero 6‘s directors Don Hall and Chris Williams said they were quite taken by the short, and called it very “cute and kawaii.”news_xlarge_baymax

Big Hero 6 opened in North America on November 7, and it will open in Japan on December 20. Artist Haruki Ueno (Phi-Brain: Saigo no Puzzle, EXILE Monogatari) launched a manga adaptation in Kodansha‘s Magazine Special in August, and Yen Press will publish the manga in North America. (The film itself is loosely inspired by Marvel’s comics of the same name, and Hall and Williams have openly cited anime and manga as major influences on their movie.)manga-awards-5

Tekken gained famed with Pendulum, a manga “flip book” animation with over 1,620 images he drew by hand. The short depicts the story of amarried couple through the years. The animation attracted over 3 million views on YouTube since its initial in release on a Japanese variety show in 2012.

After watching the video that same year, British rock group MUSE used Pendulum as the official music video for their song “Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption).” Panelist at the 42nd Japan Cartoonist Awards held by the Japan Cartoonists Association of Manga Creators honored Tekken for last May for Pendulum, lauding the short as “a work that shows us the new potential of manga.” The short is now inspiring a live-action film with Manami Konishi (Steamboy), Itsuji Itao (Cromartie High: The Movie), and Naoko Ken (Mirai Shōnen Conan Tokubetsu Hen-Kyodaiki Gigant no Fukkatsu).

The Meitetsu Department Store in Nagoya, Japan has a distinctive mannequin outside its men’s department. Nana-chan is a popular meeting spot because she’s easy to spot in the shopping district — she’s 20 feet tall. The staff change her outfits monthly, but recently she’s wearing an orange jumpsuit that fans of a certain ninja will recognize.

Until November 25, visitors can see Nana-chan dressed as Naruto Uzumaki to promote the The Last -Naruto the Movie- film before it opens in theaters on December 6. Nana-chan is fully dressed now, but you can imagine getting a 20-foot tall immovable woman ready in the morning is difficult.

Tekken producer explains virtual reality girl demo ‘Summer Lesson’

Bandai Namco Games began streaming an introduction video previewing its demo software “Summer Lesson,” which utilizes Sony‘s Project Morpheus virtual reality headset to simulate interactions with a high school girl. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia hosted a user experience meeting for the software this Saturday and Sunday, allowing around 700 users to test the software.

Tekken series director Katsuhiro Harada explained the interactions with the characters in a second video.

As producer and chief director, he explains in the video that the goal behind Summer Lesson was to make the game’s character recognize the player’s existence. This is because in normal games, even if the player recognizes the character, the character will never do the same for the player. He adds that within the game, if you look away from the character too much, the character will get upset, or if you get too close to her, she will be surprised. Harada also explains that he wanted to create an interactive and realistic enviornment, in which actual nervousness may arise from the player.

When asked why he and his team created the game, he explains that he wanted the news of game to create a large buzz, due to it making virtual reality available to a wide audience. He also added that he wanted the amusement of the game to be spread by verbal communication. Also, Harada and his team worked to create a system that would connect to the future.

As a message to players, Harada commented that the game and its use of the head-mounting display is only the first step of this technology. Harada added that the team is currently developing new contents using the same technology, and that in ten or fifteen years, the technology will have progressed to an amazing level.

The demonstration session also included several other games, including a Sword Art Online demo.

The device is not a final product, but a work in progress. Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios said during a presentation at this year’s GameDevelopers Conference (GDC) on Tuesday that “virtual reality is the next innovation from PlayStation that will [shape] the future of games.”

Currently, the developer kits for the headset have a 1080p output display, 360-degree head tracking, a 90-degree field of view, PlayStation Move and DualShock 4 support, and a spatial sound system.

The silver medal is a transcriptof an emotional press conference by Ryuutarou Nonomura, a disgraced politician in Hyōgo Prefecture, which dissolved into unrestrained bawling. The bronze medal refers to a routine used by the comedy duo Nippon Elekiter Rengou in which one comedian (Koyuki Hashimoto) rejects the advances of the other (Souko Nakano).

Dual-wielding Samus Amiibo auctions for $2,500

A factory accident has made one Metroid fan very happy, albeit a couple thousand bucks poorer. An eBay auction for a factory-sealed, defective Samus Amiibo recently ended at $2,500, with an original starting price of $50.

The Amiibo is rare in that Samus is dual-wielding two cannons, unlike the regular figure (and character) which only has one.

After a stage event, voice actress Marina Inoue snapped the ultimate selfie, one that included herself, fellow Attack on Titan actors Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman) and Yuuki Kaji (Eren Jaeger), and series director Tetsuro Araki. While the picture itself is already pretty cool, Attack on Titan mangaka Hajime Isayama took it one step further, drawing the cast as their respective characters, along with a manga-fied version of Araki.

As for the guy in the back, it’s producer Tetsuya Kinoshita.

Isayama later went back and redrew the illustration, posting the finished results on his blog, adding that he wanted to spend a little more time on it because it was fun drawing the characters with out-of-character expressions and poses.

Yamato undies remind you where you put your junk

The Yamato Crew store is selling a specially designed pair of men’s boxer shorts. The one-size-fits-all underwear takes design cues from actual anime artwork.

In a 1977 issue of OUT magazine, Susumu Kodai (“Derek Wildstar”) was shown in nothing but his skivvies. The arrow mimics the design on his uniform, but in this case works as a not-so-subtle reminder of where he keeps his junk.

Each pair costs 3,024 yen (about US$25). If you’re adventurous enough, the site classifies the underwear as “costume” wear, so do with that what you will.

Up Your Cosplay Game By Shooting Fire From Your Hands

Ellusionist has released the ultimate cosplay accessory—the Pyro Fireshooter, which allows you to literally shoot fireballs from your hands thanks to a $174 gadget that is “definitely not a toy.”

The device uses a small battery-operated wristband that uses flash cotton and flash paper to give the illusion of flinging fireballs from your bare hands.

It goes without saying that you should probably not ever bring anything like this anywhere remotely close to a convention, but for backyard shenanigans, photoshoots, and those times where you just want to unleash your inner Sailor Mars, it’s pretty cool.

Check out the Ellusionist website for videos and a full overview.

Shippers rejoice! 10,000 anime fans pick their favorite same-sex pairings

There’s a whole side of anime fandom dedicated to pairing their favorite characters together in romantic relationships, be it a male harem lead with one of his five adoring female friends, or two volleyball players who can’t stand each other (I’m talking about you, Haikyu!!). The pairing of two male characters is considered the realm of fujoshi, and series creators aren’t ignorant of their female fan’s hobbies, sometimes playing up subtext to increase a series’ popularity. The poll did have a higher turn out of female voters (66% overall).

Charapedia asked 10,000 fans what their favorite same-sex pairings are and got a lot of interesting results. While these couples aren’t always canon, they’ve accumulated their fair share of admirers.
